Making the Time for Balance!

Making the Time for Balance!

The CEO of POSH PR®, The Caroline Doll, talks about the importance of finding and ensuring balance as a business owner!

Slowly but surely I think I’m learning the art of balance. It’s not an easy thing, especially for me — someone who considers re-organizing her closet and tidying up her house as a form of relaxation. I am a go-go-go kind of person! No, it’s not an easy thing. But it is a necessary thing.

When I first started running my own business I thought I had to work 7 days a week. I was the boss and the employee! I HAD to work around the clock! Working any less meant missing out on success. Or so I thought…!

But since when does success mean 3-5 hours of sleep at night?! Not spending time with my husband, my loved ones? Not exposing myself to new, fresh experiences that could actually inspire new creativity into my work?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve “planned” my week to go “just-so” so that my weekend would be free. I’d have everything all scheduled out, but then of course something pops up, which pushes everything back. And then another thing, and then another thing. And then Thursday becomes Friday, Friday becomes Saturday, and I STILL haven’t gotten to Wednesday’s to-do’s! I saw my weekend as the time to catch up on the week’s work.

But the truth is, dolls, something is ALWAYS going to pop up. No matter how good you are at checking the things off your own list, someone else’s list depends upon your list! It’s an inevitable domino effect! And how they fall is completely out of your hands!

If you’re constantly trying to catch up, you’ll never find the time to slow down. You have to MAKE the time. This weekend I made the extra conscious effort not to work. I spent time with Costa. I went to go see a movie. Yes, things popped up. But those things were still there waiting for me Monday. But this time? This time I was refreshed and recharged to handle the business of the week because I had allowed myself to rest and re-charge over the weekend.

Being a go-go-go person is absolutely never a bad thing. On the contrary! But I think it’s so important to channel that energy toward something other than work. Devote that energy to something that invigorates you!
